The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way the Church helps a person to become a member of the Catholic Community. The Rite is a parish-based process adapted to the spiritual journey and needs of adults. Preparation for initiation into the Catholic Church is a gradual process which takes at least a year. The adult journey of faith unfolds in four phases:
Phase 1: This is the time of inquiry, an opportunity to ask questions and become acquainted with life in a Catholic Community.
Phase 2: This is the longest part of the journey. These fortnightly sessions (except during school holidays) are a time for Gospel sharing, catechesis, prayer and reflection. The sessions are usually on a Thursday evening and last for an hour.
Phase 3: This is normally associated with Lent. It is a more intense spiritual preparation for Baptism/Reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.
Phase 4: This is a time for reflecting on the Easter experience and preparing more fully to participate in the life and mission of the Catholic community.
Who will accompany me on my journey towards becoming a Catholic?
The whole parish has responsibility for the gathering and nurturing of new members. The entire community welcomes and supports you on your journey of faith.
A sponsor is delegated by the parish family for each candidate. The sponsor takes an active and supportive role as a companion, witness and guide.
A team of catechists is responsible for teaching and guiding you to a deeper reflection on the Word of God and a greater understanding of the faith of the Church.
