BMCC Lenten Walk 2026 – Walking for Water
On Saturday, 14 March, our Brunswick Moreland Catholic Community will once again take part in the BMCC Lenten Walk, a meaningful way for us to unite with the millions of people around the world who walk long distances each day simply to access clean, safe water.
This is now the second year that our community has embraced a Lenten pilgrimage walk. Last year, under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” more than 90 parishioners joined the walk and together we stepped over 10,000 steps—a joyful and hope‑filled sign of our unity and commitment. This year, we continue the tradition with a renewed focus: “The Walk for Water.” Far from starting something new, we are deepening a rhythm of Lenten pilgrimage that is becoming part of who we are as a community.
This initiative connects us directly with Caritas Australia’s Long Walk for Water, a Lenten challenge inviting individuals and communities to walk in solidarity with the 703 million people globally who still live without reliable access to clean drinking water. Caritas reminds us that every day, 292 million people walk 30 minutes or more just to collect water—often from unsafe or distant sources.
Each step we take becomes a prayer not only for water, but for dignity, justice, and the flourishing of all people.

Walking as Pilgrimage
This year, our Lenten Walk will again take the form of a pilgrimage:
We will walk together between the four churches of the Brunswick Moreland Catholic Community.
Our journey will form a living symbol of:
our shared Lenten journey toward the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ,
our movement toward returning to our Creator God, from whom our existence, grace, and blessing continually flow;
and our solidarity with those whose daily struggle for water shapes every aspect of life, reminding us that our steps can be an act of compassion and justice.
Just as Lent calls us to return to the Lord with open hearts, this walk invites us to return—step by step—to deeper compassion and connection. It reminds us that faith is not static; it is walked, lived, and carried forward together.

Why We Walk
Caritas Australia’s Long Walk for Water highlights the struggle of communities where long, exhausting walks are the only means of accessing water. Funds raised through this initiative support vital water security projects, including wells, solar‑powered pumps, improved sanitation, and community‑managed water systems.
Stories like that of Sisilia, a 13‑year‑old girl from Tanzania whose education was disrupted by long walking journeys for unsafe water, remind us of the real human impact. With support and new water systems, she can now go to school and pursue her dream of becoming a pilot.
When we walk—even for a few kilometres—we enter into this global story of hope, resilience, and transformation.

As we walk together once again as a parish community, may our steps be a witness to compassion, a sign of hope, and a reminder that even simple actions can create lasting change.
