Welcome to St Fidelis Church, Moreland

Nestled in the heart of Moreland, St Fidelis Church has been a place of faith, community, and welcome for nearly a century. Established in 1927, the parish began when Fr. John P. O’Connell recognised the growing needs of Catholics in West Moreland and proposed the formation of a new parish to serve them more closely. Mass was first celebrated in the parish school buildings until the community, with impressive dedication, built a permanent church and presbytery within its first decade, an extraordinary achievement during a period still marked by the after-effects of war and economic hardship.

Today, St Fidelis stands proudly at 49 Clarendon Street as part of the Brunswick Moreland Catholic Community, alongside the parishes of St Joseph’s, St Ambrose’s, and Our Lady Help of Christians. United under a shared mission-Opening Hearts, Opening Doors - our community seeks to bear witness to God’s love and justice in our world.

Architecturally, the church remains a local landmark. Built in the Interwar Romanesque style, St Fidelis features warm clinker brick, elegant arched windows, a striking wheel window on its eastern façade, and a distinctive bell tower that has watched over generations of parishioners. Its heritage-listed status reflects not only the building’s beauty but its long-standing role as an important gathering place for the Catholic community in this part of Melbourne.

But more than its history or architecture, St Fidelis is defined by its people. Our parish continues to grow as a vibrant, welcoming community where families, newcomers, and long-time parishioners come together in worship, service, and fellowship. Whether you are exploring the Catholic faith, returning after some time away, or seeking a spiritual home, we invite you to journey with us.
